The Csokonai terrace gardens are located in the heart of Tihany, in the immediate vicinity of the Benedictine Abbey in Tihany, which is also highly visited by tourists.
The terraced area is organically connected to the Csokonai grove, accompanying the Abbey stairs from the north.
The Csokonai terrace garden is meant to serve the relaxation of its visitors. In order to de-sign and present the place in a manner worthy of its natural, landscape and cultural signifi-cance, it was essential to make use of the features of the terrain, to strengthen pedestrian connections, and to choose the coverings, construction elements, and vegetation of the ter-race garden well. Bridgings caused by previous terrain conditions were not resolved in all cases, so the terrace gardens were difficult to access and could only be used to a limited ex-tent.
The terraced area faces the village and offers a view of the Inner Lake. Due to the differ-ences in level, terrace after terrace became unused areas. In terms of its function and use, the upper terrace has benches and tables suitable for picnics and social conversations. On the central terrace, the collection of figs is complemented by rest benches that offer a view of the settlement and the Inner-Lake. The pergola terrace garden planned on the central terrace is a larger relaxation area, which – the open space composed for the view ¬– serves to retreat and strengthen social relations.
The lower part connected to the Csokonai grove differs from the rest of the park not only in function, but also in form. The existing design with retaining walls, narrow terraces and stairs has remained. The goal here too was to make this part of the park attractive with new functions.
The Benedictine monks took on a historic role in the development and dissemination of Eu-ropean landscape culture, as demonstrated by the "medicinal and herb garden of the Bene-dictines", with a wall well, rectangular beds, and information boards. The relaxing garden area with a pergola, tables and a drinking fountain allows you to relax and eat outdoors. The fig collection will also be presented.
The crucifix was moved up a terraced garden together with the low iron fence.
